Umbrella Insurance Coverage
Frequently Asked Questions
What does umbrella insurance cover?
A personal umbrella policy increases the liability coverage on your primary policies. For example, assume you have an auto insurance policy with a $500,000 liability limit and a personal umbrella with a $1,000,000 limit. If you or a covered family member are involved in an at-fault auto accident with a total loss in the amount of $750,000, your auto insurance will only pay the policy limit of $500,000. Your umbrella policy will kick in after the auto policy limits are exhausted to pay the additional $250,000, effectively increasing your limits to $1,500,000. It works the same if you experience a loss on your home, boat, or another primary insurance policy.
How much does umbrella insurance cost?
Probably less than you think. The cost varies based on several factors but $1M in coverage can often be purchased for a few hundred dollars per year.
